Since I made our campground reservations too late in the season, we had to move to a different campground for our second night. It was an easy 30 minute drive to the Elizabethtown KOA, but having the RV sit in a shadeless parking lot on a summer day demonstrated, quite convincingly, that the RV was an enormous heat sink. Even with the AC blasting full-bore, it was a sauna until late in the night. Despite the heat, a pleasant surprise appeared at dusk. Thousands upon thousands of fireflies lit up the grass and cornfield just behind our campsite. We have fireflies in our yard at home, but nothing like the scale of what we saw here. Each one gave a single long white flash. Like synchronized Roman candles they rose up from the grass in parallel streaks of light. I took some video footage, but it didn't do justice to nature's majesty here. Keiko and Amaya used a plastic bottle as a temporary jail for about 50 of the fireflies, but they wouldn't light up as much in the bottle as they did on the ground, so the girls set them free eventually. It was peaceful ending to a very eventful day.
Fantastic blog Tom, both the pictures and the commentary! I am following along and plan to learn from your experience - I hope the giant Reese's Peanut Butter Cups survived the heat!
