It didn't take us long to decide that the next RV adventure should be a trip up the California coast. Rachelle and I met in California while I was in graduate school and we both still have friends in the bay area. My friend, Ben (Neb) Meisel—apparently inspired by our trip last summer—had rented an RV from an outfit called So-Cal Motor Home Rentals with good results. The rental was cheaper than Cruise America and the proprietor, Jeff, told me that our air conditioner died, he'd authorize a replacement immediately. Plus, this was a 32-foot Class A motor home (more like a bus than a van) with two air conditioners and slide-out panels to give more room inside while "camping."

A plan started to take shape that we'd rent the RV in LA and then drive North. One way of reducing the road miles that Rachelle and the twins would need to endure was to make this a one-way rental. Unfortunately, the fee to drop off somewhere other than the starting point would be $3/mile away from the starting point. Instead, I decided to simply add a few extra days onto the end of the trip for me to drive the RV back to LA, myself and have Rachelle and the girls fly back East on their own from points North. In the end, it seemed like Portland, Oregon would be a good destination. It's about 950 miles from LA to Portland, which was less than half of the distance we covered on the East coast last summer. Also, it didn't take too much coaxing for Neb to agree to let me fly him up to Portland at the end of our trip so that we could drive back to LA together.
The exact path we would take was not determined, but it seemed like a coastal route would be fun. I started to plan some of it, but tried to keep in mind the guiding principles that we'd come up with at the end of our last trip.
