Morro Bay Day

We had a full day at Morro Bay State Park and it was awesome—even though I never seemed to have my camera with me. We started the day by taking the dog for a little walk. It was just going to be Neb and me and one of the girls at first, but one by one the others woke up and wanted to join us. We were steps away from the bay and, sure enough, before long the girls were up to their knees in the water (and slimy, sandy, mud) even thought they were all still wearing their pajamas.

After changing into swimsuits, we rented three kayaks from The Kayak Shack and paddled across the bay to an island/sand spit that was like something out of Star Wars. Wind-swept dunes like the surface of Tatooine captured everyone's imagination. Crossing the dunes from the bay side to the ocean side took 10-15 minutes, but we were treated with an untouched stretch of sand that was a beachcombers paradise. We found shells and beautifully polished rocks of all types. Most exciting for me was the trove of sand dollars that we discovered. Our family does quite a bit of beachcombing in Maine, but it's been a long time since I've found a sand dollar. The were everywhere here. The girls were in heaven. Time flew by and when we got back to our kayaks the tide had receded significantly and we were a little worried that we'd be beached on the shallow bay. It turned out that our draft was small enough to keep us off the bottom. Even better, the strong wind that had picked up was to our backs so we flew back across the bay.

...my heart tells me that I love you, more than all those little tiny shells.

A late lunch/early dinner at the Bayside Cafe was in order. Neb and I drove in to town to stock up on local brews and s'more fixins (and feed the scratcher lottery ticket monkey on his back) before setting up a toasty campfire for the evening. I was pretty tired, so I didn't join in as vocally as I normally would have liked to do, but a lot of storytelling and singing took place, nothwithstanding. It doesn't always feel like "camping" when you're in a huge RV, but tonight it did.

S'mores... or Napalm?
